Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
Perform a full range of complex technical functions under the pharmacist's supervision with minimal supervision, including:
- Responsible for preparation of medications required for the treatment as well as research medications for various research protocols.
- Responsible for the preparation, distribution, and accountability of drugs utilized in human experimental research; as well as recording, receiving, and storing all pharmaceutical supplies, determining bulk compounds needed.
- Responsible for packaging and labeling all products compounded for treatment and research purposed per COMAR.
- Compound (including bulk compounding) and calculating the correct amount of all drugs needed.
- Calculate and converting to proper weights and measuring the amount of solution and drugs to be used, taking into account concentration, overfill for slight losses during mixture, and number of doses contained in the solution.
- Recognize atypical occurrences when compounding, e.g. changes in color, consistency, etc. and reporting problems to the pharmacist immediately.
- Operate equipment safely, effectively and in compliance with manufacturer's recommendations
- Coordinate routine maintenance on equipment as indicated by manufacturer's recommendations and policy.
- Assists in The Joint Commission or other regulatory surveys.
- Assist the pharmacist in Quality Assurance activities.
- Assists in collection and interpretation of quality assurance information under the direction of the pharmacist.
- Assists in the identification of quality improvement initiatives under the direction of the pharmacist.
- Carries out quality assurance (QA) activities, as required by the pharmacist and in compliance with COMAR, to insure the safe and accurate preparation of treatment and research medications.
- Complete all required documentation and presents documentation according to established guidelines and time frames.
- Complete all record-keeping requirements for treatment and research medications as required by federal, state, and local laws, as well as, those defined in study specific protocols.
- Maintain and ensures all documentation required by The Joint Commission is complete.
- Package and label all products compounded for treatment and research purposes appropriately.
- Orders all supplies for the pharmacy and maintains documentation of such.
- Assure strict adherence to aseptic techniques for use of clean air hoods and all other special equipment.
- Assist the pharmacist in maintaining the pharmacy area in compliance with a clean environment for the preparation of all medications.
- Attend training as required for safety.
- Understand, and abide by the Johns Hopkins University and BPRU Policies and Procedures.
- Understand, and abide by all regulatory standards (i.e., The Joint Commission, HIPAA, State and Federal Regulations).
- Assist the pharmacist in maintaining the pharmacy area in compliance with all legal requirements.
- Seek policy/procedure clarification as needed with supervisor.
- Assist the pharmacist in the development and implementation of new policies and procedures as required.
- Treat customers with courtesy, respect and caring behaviors and respond quickly and appropriately to customer requests
- Consistently demonstrates in-depth knowledge of departmental issues and practices in dealing with customer's problems.
- Anticipates customer needs and initiates action to meet those needs.

- Work cooperatively within own department and with other departments/units.
- Attends staff meetings on a regular basis.
- Communicate relevant research participant changes to appropriate staff.
- Deals with professional staff as necessary, answering questions concerning availability of drugs, dosages, etc.
- Use professional judgment in providing information based on specific situations and is sensitive to individual and organizational concerns.
- Follows appropriate channels and keeps appropriate staff informed of relevant issues and events.
- Consistently ensures that information known about a customer is kept confidential.
- Adheres to federal confidentiality and HIPAA Regulations.
- Will coordinate routine maintenance on equipment as indicated by manufacturers recommendations and policy.
- Assists in coordination of repair of faulty equipment.
- Assists in scheduling of routine preventive maintenance of equipment.
- Utilizes resources in a cost efficient manner.
- Contribute to the safety and security of the unit environment through personal actions.
- Responsible for maintaining a data inventory system to make ready retrieval and purchase of needed supplies.
- Other duties as job dictates.
Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Six months pharmacy related work experience required.
- Bachelor's Degree in Biological Sciences preferred.
Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Knowledge of strengths or dose, dosage forms, physical appearance, routes of administration and duration of drug therapy, such as extemporaneous compounding, pharmaceutical calculations.
- Ability to use computer and appropriate software such as Excel, FileMaker, Word.
- Knowledge of federal, state and local regulation pertaining to the preparation and delivery of both treatment and research medications.
- Ability to perform work with a high degree of accuracy and meticulous attention to detail regardless of sudden deadlines and changing priorities.
Technical Qualifications or Specialized Certifications:
- Pharmacy Technician Certification by the National Pharmacy Technician Board required.
- Transport equipment and supplies usually less than 50 pounds.
- Work may require prolonged sitting, standing and walking.
